What to Expect when Baby Teethes

Anyone who has ever experienced toothache understands how a baby feels when teething. Although it is a normal part of babys development as a first time parent we feel powerless and want to take all the teething pain away.

We wish that this had been over and done with in the womb, however, your baby will be proud, and so will you as soon as that first tooshy peg shows.

It won’t happen overnight

It seems that as soon as baby begins to whinge a little or wake during the night, parents are keen to put it down to the first tooth. However, most babies don’t receive their first tooth until at least seven months, which means that the wakefulness maybe something else. Babies can wake in the night as they are either ready for weaning, or have a cold. It is estimated that in their first year babies have at least six colds which makes for one every couple of months. Make sure baby has a dribble bib during the day to catch any fluid so they stay as comfortable as possible.

Yet when the first tooth does start making an appearance, unfortunately it doesn’t happen overnight. Babies can experience teething pain for a few days with no signs of the tooth at all, only to start the process all over again. The first tooth is the most difficult to cut, and parents have been known to beg to see it emerge, as for some it can seem like an incredibly cruel waiting game.

Signs of teething

There are many signs of teething that can be confused with a cold, however to tell the two apart there are a couple of signs to look out for. Babies will want to bite down, a dribble bib or just a finger near their mouth will encourage a chomping rather than the gentle sucking we’ve become used to. Babies will also probably have one red cheek. Whereas a fever with a cold can produce two rosy cheeks, teething is known for having a single one.

Babies may also have a runny nose, be irritable and wake during the night however these symptoms are related to a cold or virus too, so cannot be relied upon. If you think your baby has a temperature be sure to check with the health visitor or doctor and don’t just put it down to teething

How to tell

A good way to tell if baby is teething is to quite simply rub some gel or liquid on the gums. A teething baby will settle quite quickly with this, giving you the reassurance you need. However find other ways to make them comfortable too such as a dribble bib to catch saliva, as a fever, runny nose and blocked sinuses are nobody’s idea of a restful time!

To give the best chance of delivery before Christmas we have been advised by Royal Mail, that orders of our Bandana Bibs should be placed no later than Monday the 19th of December. This is a just a guide. We have been doing really well recently and any orders for our bibs placed before 2pm is being sent same day.

Book Review Alfie Kohn

Bringing up baby? There is so much conflicting advice out there, it can be confusing and scary for new mums and dads with their brand new dribbly babies! I have recently come across a wonderful author that challenges much of our well worn ideas about parenting. Alfie Kohn, author of Unconditional Parenting confronts the familiar carrot and stick approach to discipline. After looking at hundreds of studies Kohn demonstrates that no one performs better when offered various enticements from sweets and stickers to money and cars. We all want our children to grow up happy and confident and what better way to ensure this than to love them unconditionally. Mostly good parenting is common sense, and I find the majority of parents all have that and they do not actually need a book telling them complicated strategies for child rearing. However it is very rewarding reading a book that confirms all your common sense theories were right with perhaps one or two interesting suggestions along the way.

Unconditional parenting examines how parents think, feel and act with their children. It offers a host of wonderful, practical suggestions for exchanging doing to to working with parenting. It has been described as an eye-opening, paradigm-shattering book that will reconnect readers to their own best instincts. My box of goodies for my friends with new babies will now include this fantastic book, along with a few funky bandana bibs of course!

Orders from the 7th October

Hi,

We have had a bit of a diaster with Royal Mail and they have lost a whole package of bibs. They have agreeded (very kindly) this is unacceptable and have agreed to offer compensation and we are thus resending all the orders for that day. I am sorry about this delay, but we are working very hard to get this fixed and the bandana bibs sent out to you asap.

Kind regards

Quinoa as a weaning food for babies

Quinoa, is a great baby food, I found out about it when I was starting to wean my son and found these super organic baby foods from Plum. But as I really liked to cook for my son I started using Quinoa in my cooking.

The reason why Quinoa is so food and such a superfood, is that it has a very high protein content, as high as 18 percent, and a balanced set of Amino Acids, which babies need to build proteins, add that to the high content of fiber, phospuorous, magnesioum and iron again all essential for growth. To cap it all its gluten free and easy to digest, so really is a super food for weaning babies!

Quinoa can be cooked like rice or coucous and is easy to blend into other foods. Happy cooking but do not forget a good bib to catch the bits your little one misses!!
